Oral history interview with Martin Rind, Feb. 12, 1983.

Rind describes the lives of his parents, Max and Bertha Levinson Rind, including how his father and uncle started the Pacific Casing Company, which grew into the Milwaukee Sausage Company. Rind then discusses his own early life, growing up on Queen Anne Hill and graduating from the University of Washington in 1941. He tells of working at Milwaukee Sausage, eventually selling out the business, and focusing on importing meat. He speaks of his marriage to Bernice Mossafer in 1949 and explains that Ashkenazic-Sephardic marriages no longer seemed to cause problems. Rind describes his work with the Jewish Community Center in detail. He discusses the 1965 capital fund drive, which he chaired. He gives his opinion on the purpose of the Center. He recalls key people and major decisions and analyzes the Center's financial crisis in 1981-1982. He describes opposition to JCC expansion from congregation rabbis, and the lack of support from wealthy and established families of Temple de Hirsch. He concludes with reflections on his own community service.
